Following on from the announcement of the release of Weingartner 7, jpc have also announced the release on cpo of the Violin Concerto and Clarinet Concerto by Dutch composer Gottfried Hendrik Mann (1858-1904):

Thrilling news! A prolific Dutch composer I've never heard of before... And that makes the CD featuring the Clarinet Concerto (1885) and the Violin Concerto (1901) a must-buy for me.

I've never heard of Mann either but his catalogue looks really promising and this is a mouthwatering release. cpo seem to be on a bit of a roll at present.

The VC is written in what one might call a mid-to-late romantic musical lingua franca - very much school of Bruch and pretty old-fashioned for 1901. Nevertheless, it's very enjoyable and - at just over 17 minutes - it never outstays its welcome. Unlike Weingartner, Mann seems to have composed within his limitations...

Interesting list of works at Wikipedia. All IMSLP has is 2 choruses to texts by Gautier, though we do have those. I now feel like putting in a request/wishlist just 'cause... Thanks...

Today I've listened for the first time to this CD with music from the to me totally unknown Dutch composer Mann. Pleasant and rather quiet, not very memorable late romantic music. Not really an exciting listening experience. Nevertheless I'm happy with the disc which I will give next year another spin.

The violin/piano reduction of the op.101 concerto, published in 1901, has now been scanned (not by me) and uploaded to IMSLP.
