I agree with you Eric, I don't hear a 'hollywood' connection either. I don't know if I would compare him to mid-20th century composers, as I think he specifically is targeting a late 19th century sound, along the Brahms rather than Strauss tradition (though by no means does he compare with those two). Anyway, one of the things I like about him is his personal story (see first post).
