Written in 1882 while he was still studying at the St. Petersburg Conservatory I think this is much more than a student piece.  I recently got the Naxos recording which I plan to review.

Yep - see http://sdtom.wordpress.com/2009/05/07/piano-concerto-in-f-minorarensky/ ... (I searched in his Classical Music category, couldn't find it, but it wasn't filed there.)

I have just read your review.  Rimsky-Korsakov thought his music would be forgotten after his death but there are too many good tunes for that.  (It was Cui that was almost forgotten). I think that was part of his problem and suspect that he was just as interested in drinking and gambling and so having a natural talent for composition it was a means of supporting the former.  Do you know his first piano trio, I love that.  I would like to hear his opera. I did read somewhere that he was very 'secretave' about his private life and few if any were ever invited to his home.  He died in Finland.
