Reinecke was an arch-conservative, of course. But he was a proper composer and his VC is quite wonderful.

Yes, it's a wonderful piece...very much a "symphonic" concerto.  Perhaps, if Brahms' concerto hadn't come along, Joachim would have persevered with Reinecke's, his next performance would not have been below par and the concerto would have had a chance of entering the repertoire.
