Fred Barlow (1881- 1951)

I recently came across this 1962 recording : Concert Fred Barlow. It is downloadable from the Qobuz website.

Despite the name, he was a Frenchman who although he composed in many forms and styles was mainly known for his operettas.

The LP includes a Sinfonietta for Strings & Timpani; a Sonata for Flute Trio; 2 motets; songs and other chamber pieces.

He studied with Koechlin & Hure; came to music comparatively late in life; and became a Quaker.

When I listened with " an innocent ear" I was unable to identify the composer ( who could?) and found some of the works quite attractive, particularly the sacred works.

Fred's entry in Groves is very favourable to this rare composer.

Does any member have any more recordings by him? I'd love to hear the operettas.
