John's post brings up an interesting point: we're not really enjoying these works in the setting they were intended for. Our ability to enjoy repeated hearings enables us to notice details lost on much of their original audience, who might never have had the chance to have a work 'grow on them'. Maybe in four-hand reductions, but even then...

If his ponderous 1st symphony is anything to go by, I would say that Hermann Bischoff is definitely justifiably unsung. I've just listened to it once more and I'm afraid that I haven't altered my opinion of it.
