Howard Ellis Carr  Born 26.12.1880 Manchester  Died 16.11.1960

The son of Edward and Lillie Carr¹,  He was the eldest of three children² He came to public attention as a London theatre conductor between 1903-06. He then went to Australia for a period, where he married.³  After returning to England they had one son.⁴.Between 1921-28 he was conductor of the Harrogate Municipal Orchestra⁵, after which he returned to Australia to head the state conservatorium in Sydney, returning to England in 1938.

Thanks, Giles. You alert us to so many truly Unsung Composers, and it is exciting to think that so much music remains to be discovered. As you noted elsewhere, there is no guarantee that the compositions don't deserve obscurity, but it would be fun to find out. And, who knows what one might find.

It would indeed - especially if the time-period covered were extended well beyond 1876.

Vol.1 covers the period to 1914; vol.2 to 1945. And yes, it is in English!
