For those of you that are active on Chandos Records' forum this will be old news. Anyways Chandos will, after recording 4 volumes of Johan Halvorsen's orchestral output (the 4th volume is not released yet), turn their attention to Johan Svendsen. According to Ralph Couzens; Svendsen's Cello Concerto will be recorded this summer. No details about artists or what an upcoming Svendsen-series from Chandos will include, but still great news that the Cello Concerto is a part of it. Has it been recorded before?

I have a taped recording of the Svendsen concerto by Hege Waldeland (?) and the Bergen SO cond. Karsten Andersen. Must be a very old one.

Recordings including conductor Karsten Andersen are usually old, yes. Hege Waldeland-Lörstad is a Norwegian-born cellist now living in Sweden and is now a teacher at the Musical Academy in Malmö. The recording you're referring to was made in 1974. Thank you!

Thart's the LP I used to have. I don't know what happened to it - but I loved that Cello Concerto, and I've missed being able to hear it for a long time. Really beautiful music.

If Mark gives his O.K. I may upload my old tape recording. ;)

OK. It's a lovely work which I too had on LP - was it a NKF one? The Svendsen symphonies themselves quite delicious pieces and it'll be good if Chandos include them in their new series. I wonder what the third (allegedly burnt by his wife when she discovered some infidelity of his) was like?

Alan Howe

Of course, Chandos have already done the symphonies - with Dausgaard. Can't see the point of them doing them again. Let's have a recording of the CC, though - perhaps with a really good one of the VC thrown in...

JimL

Gads!  I hope not on the same disc!

eschiss1

that seems a strong reaction- why not...

JimL

'Cause I already have the VC.  Pretty decent performance, too.  Don't want to duplicate.  How about a nice Svendsen symphony instead?  :D

So, Chandos have paired Neeme Järvi and Bergen PO again for a 4 disc series. Although Svendsen is well represented in the catalogues, I believe this project will be a success as long as the quality of the performances are as high as in the Johan Halvorsen series. And we'll get a new recording of the cello concerto!

...but (presumably) we'll get Järvi in the symphonies which he's already done brilliantly in Gothenburg for BIS. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

I know the subject mentions Chandos, but I am putting this here since there is a general discussion of Svenden's works.

A live performance from 1982 of Svendsen's cello concerto, broadcast on NRK TV in Norway.
