Apolinary Szeluto (1884-1966)

Dear all, I wanted to draw your attention to a a recent (posted July 21st) performance of Apolinary Szeluto's First Symphony, "Academic", from 1920, by the Polish Wieniawski Symphonic Orchestra (Lublin); it can be viewed here.

In later years, Szeluto turned towards social realism, but here he's still operating in firmly romantic territory. It seems he tried to rival Myaskovsky in the sheer number of his symphonies, but in the end achieved a "mere" twenty-five.

Wikipedia tells me he also wrote no less than 70 (!) operas. Well that's a prolific composer! Nota bene he was a top ministry official in Warsaw and a concert pianist during the years 1918–34 (a time when he "only" composed an opera, the mentioned 1st symphony, symphonic poems and many piano pieces), and later a socialist party official and judge after 1945. When did this man sleep! I was always already amazed by Atterberg's output besindes his job at the patent office. I am not judging the quality of these works, but also if they weren't of high quality, writing all this alone is enormous...

Ewk, your list mentions no fewer than 28 symphonies, which means that at least quantitatively, he left Myaskovsky behind him. Still some way to go before ending up in Segerstam-ish numbers, though.

with Szeluto nothing is clear.
in the archive section of UC I quoted a part from the booklet of DUX CD with Szluto's chamber music

" In Szeluto's CV the truth was mixed with the fiction: the titles of his compositions and the fact of their existence were actually true. Later, since the end of the 1940's, as a result of the composer's developing depression, his operas and symphonies contained only titles and several words or notes (e.g. his opera in five acts filled two pages). The performances and recordings of his Majestic Peace Symphony were rather invented by Szeluto. He even failed to provide its instrumentation. The songs with political undertones (Stalin's Oath on lenin's Grave etc.) listed by Szeluto, were probably never written. A fairly detailed catalogue of Szeluto's compositions, prepared by Tadeusz Szantruczek, does not mention such titles. [...] The most important and probably the most accurate comments [on his music] were those by Feruccio Busoni stating that Szeluto's works "were one of a kind" and by Fritz Kresiler writing that his compositions are completely different than anything else".

I've been researching this and found that the Szeluto was recorded as part of a 36-CD box set - yours for £277!  (and a very large shelf...).  The project was called "100 for 100: Musical Decades of Freedom" - they chose one piece that was written in each year since the foundation of the Polish Republic in 1918.  www.stonasto.pl but you will need google translate.

Inevitably, given the time bracket, most of the pieces are NOT of our preferred era/style.  But there are a few.  I have the Szeluto piece now and it certainly fits.  Other possibilities are the Nowowiejski (Organ Symphony no.9 in F minor, op.45) and Rozycki (Apollo And The Maiden, Ballet in 6 Tableaux) - neither of which i have heard.
