I have been listening again to Botstein's recording on Koch Schwann - a very fine performance of what must surely be one of Bruch's strongest choral works. I am particularly struck by the obvious influence of early Wagner (Bruch must have known the grand 'ceremonial' scenes of Lohengrin and Tannhäuser.)
