A violinist, conductor and composer whose recording repertoire was diverse (including e.g. a range of never-before-recorded early works* by Sibelius and works by Jarnefelt**, say...) died yesterday at the age of 48.

*as well as the premiere, possibly? of the original orchestration of Sibelius' late Masonic Ritual Music, too, and many works by other composers not always in our manifest.

**Listed as conductor and violinist of a Järnefelt CD (BIS, 2010) of "Symphonic fantasy (1895) Suite in E flat major (1897) ; Serenade (1893) ; Berceuse for violin and orchestra (1904)".

Alan Howe

Sadly, he had a brain tumour.

Have only just stumbled across this, and am shocked. I knew his playing through the music of Finnish composers more recent than those considered here - Sallinen, Aho, Rantala, Pulkkis. A fine artist. Those who follow the Finnish music scene will miss him sorely.
