...orchestrations of his two late Clarinet Sonatas, coupled with Rabl's lovely Quartet for Piano, Clarinet, Violin and Cello, Op.1:

It will be interesting to compare Berio's orchestration of the 1st with this one.  I know of another orchestration of the 2nd, but I can't recall who did it.  From what I could hear, this new 1st sounds fuller and more intricate than the Berio.

I like Rabl, but I have always objected to recordings that mix orchestral with non-orchestral music.

Not for me,I'm afraid.  It's the musical equivalent of the pushmi-pullyu!

Isn't this one of DH's "cocaine hippos"?  ::)

Much as I enjoyed the orchestration of the early version of Brahms' Op.8, this particular kind don't, I agree, have the greatest track record. (With exceptions: orchestrations of, say, Alkan's piano symphony and concerto seem, really, kind of natural...)

Probably. But I think I'll indulge this time round.

I'm with you, Alan.  If there's room for Liszt's and Joachim's takes on Schubert, Berlioz's on Weber, Ravel's on Mussorgsky, Stokowski's on Bach, Schoenberg's on Brahms -- to name just a few  -- then Mr. Koncz can have his shot at Brahms, too, the objections of a certain YouTube circus freak be damned.

Orchestral arrangements have a long tradition.  Each deserves to judged on its own merits or faults.
