Does anyone here know the opera?
Well it has a overture, in the 'young Wagner' style of the symphonies, etc.
Thanks. I was wondering whether it's worth buying, that's all.
It's not top notch Wagner, though enjoyable. It all sounds like Weber to me.
Er, that should have been 'NICE overture'/
x.x
It's my favourite Wagner opera, actually. I think it's pretty good, though I haven't given it a full listen but once. I have cracked it out a few times to listen to a few parts now and then.
To my taste, it's not incredible or anything, but I do think it's worthwhile, and certainly not bad. But then, I'm someone who adores Weber and doesn't like "top notch" Wagner!
Well, I love Weber as well as Wagner, so I think it'll be for me!
I didn't mean to damn with faint praise. I only meant it doesn't sound anything like mature Wagner. It's remarkably good for a first opera, even if the spirit of Weber is in charge.
That's fine. I've ordered the Sawallisch recording.
I remember being surprised at how good it was in a post-Weber way.
