Title: Grieg Overture In Autumn
Post by: Alan Howe on Sunday 20 October 2013, 05:35
Heard this on the car radio yesterday and couldn't identify the composer at all. A marvellous piece - anybody know it?

Have heard it (often from a recording coupled with his symphony (I think there's one or two others?...), broadcast on classical radio etc.) - agreed, agreed.

Hi all,

I'm going to perform this piece in my orchestra in March, so if anyone is in Freiburg in Germany then... Have a listen ;)

I have heard and liked since....around forty years. My discover came through a Beecham vinyl record which coupled "In Autumn" and the " Old Norwegian Romance with Variations" to Schubert's Sixth.
Much later came the Cd with some versions : Jansons Olympia; Engeset Naxos; Sakari Brilliant.

I have the Beecham recording on EMI, the Jarvi on DG, and the Ruud on BIS. I think it's a delightful work, full of Grieg's customary fresh brand of lyricism and finely judged drama.
