Napoleon-Henri Reber Born 21 October 1807 Mulhausen Died 24 November 1880 Paris
His music studies were with Anton Reicha, Daniel Jelensperger and Jean Francois Leseur at The Paris Conservatory. From 1851 he became Professor of Harmony there and from 1862 Professor of Composition. He is still considered to be one of the best ever teachers at The Conservatory.

Thanks, Giles. Reber seems to be enjoying a modest renaissance, what with one of his symphonies and three of his piano trios now being available on CD.
At the risk of attracting ire from some quarter or other, I'd say a 'modest renaissance' is appropriate for this composer.

Five of his piano trios! 3, 5 & 7 on a Timpani release which has already been mentioned here, and 4, 6 & 7 on an excellent 1995 Koch Schwann CD with "Trio Reber" performing, which I found used last week. I enjoyed it enough to immediately order the new one. Hopefully Timpani will release more of his chamber works.
