Hugo Kaun (1863-1932) has been the subject of a little discussion on this forum. Born in Berlin, Hugo emigrated to the United States in 1887 and settled in Milwaukee, which was home to a well-established German immigrant community. At the turn of the century, Kaun returned to Germany and continued his teaching in Berlin where he died in 1932.
I offer this rendition of a short but extremely vibrant orchestral overture entitled Am Rhein (with score)
Shades of Richard Strauss, Wagner and Mahler along with a few dollops of Viennese schmaltz. The orchestration is masterly.
