Title: Question?
Post by: monafam on Sunday 21 June 2009, 04:20
I've been on for a week now and enjoying the conversations that have been going on.   For some reason, I didn't notice the comment in the "Composers and Music" forum that says this is essentially for Romantic-era composers.

Should all the topics be specific to that, or is it more wide open to include all eras?  I assume the latter based on some of the threads, but I wanted to make sure I was reading this right.

Probably not a big deal, but I didn't want to bring up topics that are not appropriate to this forum.

Thanks!

Not so much romantic-era composers as music composed in the romantic tradition. That allows for a lot of 20th century composers and some late-classical too. Monteverdi and Stockhausen, however, are out! ;)

Oh but Mark. I so much prefer Montiverdi to Stockhausen!

I'm delighted for you and, indeed, I much prefer M to S too. But we're talking absolutes here, not relatives!  :)

I think that the main difference between the two was that Montiverdi was a serious composer and pioneer of opera whereas Stockhausen was just a clown specialising  in some rather impracticable practical musical jokes.

Talking of Stockhausen and jokes, you will recall the one which Sir Thomas Beecham made at Stockhausen's expense...

Oh yes Mark, but I think we aught to watch where we tread!
