Title: Antonio Meneses (1957-2024)
Post by: eschiss1 on Saturday 03 August 2024, 15:40
Antônio Meneses Neto died today. He recorded a fair amount of David Popper, Villa Lobos (on LP decades ago and more recenly on CD for Naxos), Cassado, Hans Gàl (cello concerto), d'Albert (cello concerto (Naxos recording) - but he also recorded it on Pan in 1993), Romberg and Ghedini (double concertos back in 1990), among others in addition to better-known works, so at least this feels relevant to this forum, as his contribution seems significant. (I think I had a few of his recordings of more standard repertoire items on tape when I was starting purchasing etc.)

I have a friend who is conductor and is from the same city (Recife) as Meneses.  At the beginning of my friend's career he met him and, a bit star-struck, told him they were from the same hometown. Meneses looked at him and delivered a withering remark, something along the lines of, "Yeah, so are a lot of people."

Which I guess makes him something like the Richard Taruskin of the cello.
