Recordings & Broadcasts / Re: Samuragochi Symphony No.1

Further to my previous post, I received my cd from Japan within a week of placing my order. I have since listened to the symphony several times and I get more out of the music each time I listen. The music is very powerful, impressive and moving - a stunning work, well worth the £30 + I paid for the cd.

Further to my previous post, I received my cd direct from Alba within days of placing my order. I am very impressed with their efficiency.  Re-the music itself, I am quite taken with Merikanto and enjoyed listening to both symphonies. I am particularly keen on the 3rd symphony, especially for the weight given to the woodwinds in this work. Both symphonies have lovely melodies and are very well orchestrated.

I too have succumbed and ordered my copy of the CD direct from Japan via Amazon. In view of the praise lavished on this symphony, to pay £30 pounds plus for the CD is worth it. I am looking forward to receiving my copy. I have already been told that the CD is in the post!

I read this thread with interest and then downloaded both symphonies from the Downloads section.I very much liked what I heard, especially symphony no 3. I have consequently ordered the Alba disc directly from Alba and look forward to receiving it. The cost of ordering direct is a little high but I was very impressed by their professionalism - they confirmed despatch of the CD the day after I placed my order. Now it's just a question of how long it takes to reach me by post!

I too would like to second Christo's comments re- the music of Sulkan Tsintsadze. I bought my copy of Kartuli Musika last summer and it remains one of my favourite CDs. It's a pity that there is not more of his music commercially available. If any members have any other works on LP, it would be great to see them uploaded in the Downloads folder.

I too would like to echo Albion's comments regarding the Downloads section of the forum. It has been a real revelation and I have discovered an incredible amount of wonderful music I would not otherwise have encountered. And even more incredible, it has been cost-free! I thank all the members who have so generously uploaded their favourite works from unsung composers - you have enriched my sound world!

I bought this CD just over a week ago and have played it several times since. If you like Braga Santos's  first 4 symphonies, then you will like this disc too, especially my favourite work on the CD - the Alfama Ballet Suite : lovely melodies, very lively dance rhythms. The Overture which opens the CD is also a delightful work.

I recently received my copy of this CD and have played it numerous times since. Members of the forum will know I am a big fan of Fikret Amirov and also know I have a particular liking for a touch of the exotic in my classical music (as per the two threads I opened on these topics). The Amirov/Nazirova PC after Arabian themes is exactly my cup of tea! I had been waiting for ages for it to appear commercially and I have not been disappointed finally hearing this work after such a long wait. Not surprisingly, I love it! - very lyrical, lovely melodies, lush orchestration and more than a dash of Arabian exotism. If you want to hear something slightly different, I recommend that you give the Amirov/Nazirova PC a try. Incidentally, you can hear the whole concerto on Youtube but the sound quality is poor and doesn't do the work justice!

Recordings & Broadcasts / Re: Dvarionas Violin Concerto

I too bought this cd for the Dvarionas VC and was very pleased I did. The Dvarionas VC is lovely but I was really taken with the Korngold VC. I knew Korngold's music from films but was not familiar with his classical work.  I found the VC lyrical and very moving. It was also very enjoyable picking out the extracts from the films. A CD well worth buying!

Composers & Music / Re: Joly Braga Santos(1924-88)
Tuesday 25 October 2011, 17:35
I too am a keen admirer of Braga Santos's symphonies. As already stated in this thread, BS composed 6 symphonies, four early on and two, in a more modern sound, later in his career. Like others, I rate his early symphonies more highly than his last two. My favourite symphony is also number 4, with its echoes of Bruckner and Sibelius (especially in the first movement). The finale is particularly moving and I fully concur with others in this thread who believe Braga Santos deserves to be far better known.

I need to correct an error in my previous post on this thread.  The Fantasia for piano and orchestra, a reworking of the 1st PC, is by Tsintsadze and not Amirov. Both composers feature on CD no 8 of the Brilliant box set, hense my confusion. Amirov did of course write some splendid music for the ballet "1001 Nights", also known as "Arabian Nights". If any member does, incidentally, have a recording of Tsintsadze's first PC after Georgian themes, I would be very interested to know.

Many thanks TerraEpon for your post. I have been looking out for this Amirov PC for a long time. I am not surprised that you say the sound samples are wonderful. I am a big admirer of Amirov's music. Did you know that the Fantasy for piano and orchestra (readily available but only in a Brilliant box set) is a reworking of the PC, so it will be fascinating to compare both works.
