Well to me it seems that the huge push toward large box sets (be they be for composers, orchestras, conductors or performers) in the past few years far beyond those that have been in previous years is a clear sign they are aiming to, as it were, close the book on releasing (past?) stuff on CD. Just my own gut feeling, especially since apparently a lot of the CD pressing plants have shut down recently.

Yeah, even though I'm in the US they were often the cheapest when making larger orders. All that's left now is ImportCDs really.

Man I long for the days of AllBooks (I think it was called)....heh.

I also have the Denon disc, probably bought it I dunno seven years ago I'd guess. Was probably under $15. Sucks that it's so expensive now. I do prefer Josephselegend though.

The Naxos series is I believe 13 discs total across the 11 volumes (all the chamber music and songs including), though it includes a few things not from Peches as well that I mentioned above (and there's a few piano pieces that are on MDG's set which technically are part of Peches but not in specific 'albums as well as some songs, I'm sure Naxos recorded those as well but I haven't done a checking of the Naxos discs against the master list yet)

Well the series on Naxos has a bunch of stuff not recorded before, but there's also two or three pieces outside of that that aren't part of Péchés de Vieillesse (so were the set called 'Complete Published Piano Music from Péchés de Vieillesse' that'd work....though it also includes Prelude Religieux from Petite Messe Solennelle)

Obviously Rossini isn't unsung but his piano music is. MDG just reissued the 8 CDs of his piano music performed by Stefan Irmer in a box set. Suffice it to say, I'm happy to FINALLY have all of this (despite not actually being complete)....so much great music that actually looks more forward than one might think in a lot of ways (some of it anticipates Satie, as noted in the notes).

And Irmer is by far the best in this -- the performances by Paolo Giacometti on Channel are on a tinny period piano ('authentic' maybe but not enjoyable) and Alessandro Marangoni on Naxos just drags....

So yeah.

Note there also exists a symphony in Bb which apparently has the first movement exposition extant. Well according to the thematic catalog anyway.
Plus three "Children's Symphony"s, whatever that means (I assume they are fragments of string symphonies)

Eh, well considering you've worked for record companies I'd hope you'd know by know their marketing tricks. I'd rather something like this over, say, calling something 'complete' when it isn't.

Looking at the blurb it doesn't seem they are claiming any sort of premiere, just that the 1895 version is the one "most well known", which is likely true as far as what is preformed in the theater. On recordings almost everyone uses the original version (I've only ever come across one recording of the 1895 one and it's VERY different, enough that it's pretty obvious....I believe it even only has three acts instead of four)

FWIW that Serenade orchestral version I mentioned above came out on a Naxos disc earlier this year.

Nice to see another recording of La Foi....the Bacchanale, not so much x.x
