Apologies for chiming in without having read the entire thread, but something occurred to me. One reason unsung composers aren't respected is because many who condemn them probably have rarely if ever heard their music.

I'd love to listen to a weekly or monthly podcast that discusses and plays the music of unsung composers. Does such a podcast already exist? If not, disseminate the music in a free and convenient way--a podcast--and I imagine good things will happen.

The series is dedicated to unjustly neglected works, which are no longer available or were never available before. It is a direct and idealistic response to  the fact, that the repertoire of classical music is shrinking every day and many little known pieces are vanishing into oblivion. We hope that our scores will help this music revive and survive. If you want to know more about our activity, please visit our website www.musikmph.de. There you find the catalogue of our study scores which will allow a survey of the fundamental idea of our publication work.

Just finished listening to the new Isserlis recording of the Dvorak Cello Concerto (excellent), including a track of the original third-movement ending (awful!). The liner notes mention that Hanus Wihan composed two cadenzas for Dvorak's Concerto. Does anyone know if these cadenzas are published or if they have been recorded? Thanks!

I haven't yet seen what the specific pieces are, but this upcoming CD of live Oistrakh performances includes Aulin and Stenhammar. Looking forward to it...

Last year I read an article on classical CD sales. Due to various factors such as digital downloads, piracy, disinterest, etc., a CD could easily end up on Billboard's Classical Top 10 list having sold less than 100 copies in a week. So, out of curiosity, how many copies of the average unsung CD (actual CDs, not digital downloads) get sold within the first few years of release? I know "average" is a difficult thing to measure, because some recordings will be more popular than others. Thus, for instance, take Hyperion's recording of the Brull Piano Concertos--how many copies do you think it sold? Or does anyone know the actual number? Thanks!

Composers & Music / Re: Violin Concerto Wishlist!
Saturday 14 April 2012, 12:27
"Today, in a confirmation email of my purchase of their CD of Brüll's Symphony, David Kant-Watson of Cameo Classics advises that in June they will record the Brüll Violin Concerto.  It should be available in August, coupled with Serenades by Jadassohn."

Anyone know if/when this CD will be released? Thanks!

Could someone point me toward unsung viola concertos (which aside from Bartok and a few others is probably most of them!). Thanks very much!

Brilliant Classic's Golden Age of the Romantic Piano

Are these recordings worth getting, or am I better off paying more for CDs from Hyperion's Piano Concerto series?

Composers & Music / Kastalsky

Any thoughts or recommendations on the Russian choral composer Kastalsky? Never heard of him until I was listening to Tchaikovsky's Sacred Choruses tonight and Kastalsky was mentioned in the liner notes.

Composers & Music / Re: Violin Concerto Wishlist!

I also wondered if the Jenner reference to a violin concerto might be a mistake. It reminds me of a passage from either the Emery or Toskey violin encyclopedias in which it claims Massenet wrote a violin concerto. Tantalizing, but unfortunately untrue. Massenet planned to write a violin concerto, but it never ended up happening.

Anyone familiar with the music of Jenner? Is it worth a listen?

Composers & Music / Re: Violin Concerto Wishlist!

The only thing I can tell you about a possible Jenner Violin Concerto comes from this link

http://books.google.com/books?id=FNJ6Ua9iaUoC&pg=PA262-IA12&lpg=PA262-IA12&dq=gustav+jenner+violin+concerto&source=bl&ots=v1WptKZsWX&sig=X9KYZ1J_4DvtJhn9a7jPruM9Gyk&hl=en&ei=1dt0TPGpFYy3ngf3ttDGBg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=3&ved=0CBkQ6AEwAg#v=onepage&q=gustav%20jenner%20violin%20concerto&f=false

Read the first paragraph of the Vienna, March 15, 1906 report, and it mentions a Jenner Violin Concerto in E-flat. I haven't looked any further on the topic yet.
