For any one who is interested in Sterndale Bennett, the Royal Academy of Music, London has an all day event with talks and performances of his music, some of which will be played on his Broadwood piano recently restored with funding from the late Oliver Davies and Barry Sterndale Bennett.
It takes place next Tuesday 22 November.  Tickets are free and can be had by going to their web site.

eschiss1 - It is probably not worth looking for the string quartet. Cobbett's reviewer is not very enthusiastic about it. They are usually fairly accurate.

Sir Julius Benedict  Born 27,11,1802 Stuttgart  - Died 5,5,1885 London

Julius was the son of a banker..His earliest music lessons were with Johann Abeille in Stuttgart and later with Johann Hummel in Weimar. where he was introduced to Carl Maria von Weber with whom he had private lessons.
Aged 19 he was appointed conductor at a Vienna theatre then onto Naples where he composed his first opera. Following a short stay in Paris, he moved to London in 1836 which became his home for the rest of his life. He combined conducting with composing.

Giuseppe Ferrata  Born 1.1.1865  Gradoli, Romagna – Died 28.3.1928 New Orleans

At fourteen he won a scholarship to the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome, where he studied under Giovanni Sgambatti and Eugenio Terziani, following which he received a few lessons from Franz Liszt.  He emigrated to the US in 1892 later settling at New Orleans, where  he taught at the Tulane University.

Jacob (Jacques) Rosenhain Born 2.12.1813 Mannheim  Died 21.3.1894  Baden Baden

Jacob was a child prodigy, making his first public appearance as a pianist at the age of eight. He studied with Jacob Schmitt, Johann Kalliwoda and Schnyder von Wartensee. In 1837 he stayed in London for a short period, then moving to Paris, though travelling extensively in Europe as a performer for the next thirty years. In 1870 he settled in Baden Baden where he remained until his death.

Daniel Gregory Mason  Born 20.11.1873 Brookline, Mass. - Died 4.12.1953 Greenwich, Conn.

Daniel was the son of a piano manufacturer. In 1895 he went to Harvard University where he studied music under John Knowles Paine. After graduating he continued his studies with Arthur Whiting, George Chadwick and Percy Groetschius.  He later went to Paris to study with Vincent d'Indy. Following his return to the US he pursued  a career as a composer and teacher. .With his compositions he sought to develop a 'National style' following the music of Anglo-Saxon New England and the old south. It was all in a late romantic style.

Retrospect Opera are to record Stanford's opera Shamus O'Brien during January 2023.  They are appealing for funds for this as they are several thousand pounds short for the completion of the project.

Retrospect Opera will be releasing a recording of MacFarren's comic opera The Soldier's Legacy which was premiered in 1864 . in time for Xmas.

Henri was the son of Hippolyte Rabaud, a cellist and minor composer. His initial studies were at the Lycee Condorcet. He followed this, studying at the Paris Conservatoire with Antoine Taudou, Jules Massenet and Andre Gedalge. He was dissatisfied with Massenet's teaching. He won the Prix de Rome in 1894. Henri was an admirer of Mascagni, Puccini and Verdi.  Modernism is the enemy was his mantra.

He was a frequent conductor at the opera.

Henry Roche who was a direct descendant of Ignaz Moscheles and did all he could to promote his music, sadly died yesterday.  I will always remember him as a very warm character.

Adolf H A Weidig Born 28.11.1867 Hamburg  Died 23.8.1931 Hinsdale, Illionois.

Adolf was the son of Ferdinand Weidig a trombonist. He initially studied the violin with Johannes Jagan, and later at the Hamburg Conservatory with K L Brugheer and Hugo Riemann.  At the age of 16 he became a member of the Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra.  In 1887 he entered The Munich Conservatory where he was a pupil of Abel and Josef Rheinberger.
Quote from Cobbett's 'All Weidigs music reveals a profoundly scholarly manner of writing, he is thoroughly skilled in the use of all contrapuntal and harmonic devices'

He decided to go to the US in 1892 and settled in Chicago. He married Helen Ridgway in 1896

Louis-Etienne Ernest Reyer.  Born 10.12.1823  Marseilles  Died 15.1.1909 Le Lavandou, Hyeres

His initial musical training was at the Free School of Music in Marseilles.  At the age of sixteen he was sent to live with an uncle, Louis Farrenc in Algeria. It was there that he began to compose songs and a mass, which was performed at the cathedral  in Algiers.  In 1848 he went to Paris to study with his Aunt the composer Louise Farrenc. There he met Flaubert and Gautier both of whom had an interest in oriental subjects, which was to influence on some of his music.
His original surname was Rey.

In 2012 I met with a descendant of Eugene d'Albert. It was they who told me about the early concerto in G major which is in Dresden. In their opinion it was of curiosity value only. For completists it might be worth recording but otherwise is best left to scholars.

I feel a bit numb and a feeling of desolation so Shostakovich 11th Symphony in G minor Op.103.

Also the slow stateliness of Elgar's 1st Symphony.
