Suggestions & Problems / Re: Problem with Mediafire

It seems to be a regional problem in the UK. I've been at my parents house and it is working ok. They use TalkTalk for both internet and telephone, so it looks as if the problem is regional/network provider.

You may be right about BT blocking mediafire.  BT are I understand fairly aggressive about blocking sites, neither my partner or I use BT as an internet supplier, but as they 'own the lines' I suppose this still may have cause the loss of accessibility in parts of the UK.

Well I've tried it on firefox and though I can reach the download stage, nothing happens when I try and download, it just endlessly opens up a new window or times out after 10 seconds. So there is nothing more I can do, I've just tried through my partner's high powered laptop with the same result. There IS clearly a problem with mediafire.com in parts of the UK.  I would strongly suggest that a different storage site is used for the UK. For the moment its looks like unsung composers is no longer of any help to me and this has sadly ruined my weekend as there are many works I wish to hear and many others I wish to upload for others to hear.

I'm using google chrome and have been for over a year. I don't think that is the problem and I've checked to see if any updates are due, but everything seems to be up to date.

Well I've given up as I've tried another 30 times, I can occasionally get in to the catalogue but the moment I press download I get the same old message that it can't connect. I just tried the Butting downloads with the same result. I've checked everything on my computer and am at a total loss. As its been like this now for two weeks, it looks as if I'm no longer going to be able to use this website to listen to all these rare works, which has greatly upset me. Is there any other way to listen and download the attached files without having to use this mediafile service?

I've just tried a few more times, most of the time mediafile won't load up and I get the it is taking too long message, or if it does upload the mediafile page contains no files. I'm even trying the various folders and getting the same result. The net speed is fine, (it did an 80 mins itunes album download in less than 30 seconds) and everything else, even the most detailed web page is quick to download. I'm currently at my partners (about 40 miles from London) the broadband is far superior down here to my home in Suffolk.

I've been having problems opening the British and Irish Music archive accessing any of the pages and being unable to listen or download any items for a while. I keep getting oops we can't connect to mediafile, I used to have no problems and I'm starting to get rather annoyed.

The Moeran is lovely I've already played my CD several times. The finale is somewhat scrappy, but then Martin Yates didn't have much to go on. The slow movement is a real gem, it has brought tears to my eyes every time I've heard it so far. Perhaps though Moeran's actual completion may surface. The material that was located in Melbourne was only largely in piano score with some indications of scoring for the first three movements, but there are some indications that Moeran was working on a full score and that he may have completed the work, so perhaps it is still awaiting discovery if he didn't destroy his full score.

Not sure what happened to the ordering of the concert, but the 2nd half consisted of Delius's Over the Hills and Far Away along with the Moeran.

Composers & Music / Re: Unsung Viola Concertos

Another to add to the list is Henk Badings Viola Concerto. One work for Viola & Orchestra that's never been recorded is Roy Harris's Elegy & Paen.

Composers & Music / Re: Symphonies in Disguise?
Sunday 06 May 2012, 11:44
I've seen Scriabin's Poem of Ecstasy labelled as his 4th Symphony on a few occasions. With The Divine Poem already being his Symphony No 3, this would make some sense. There is also the case of Kajanus's Aino occasionally labelled a symphony, though it is clearly a symphonic poem, though Kajanus's Sinfonietta really is a fully fledged symphony.

Bax is definitely 'unsung'. His symphonies are rarities in the concert hall and on R3 these days. The 2nd which finally got a Proms airing last year is a masterpiece IMO as are the 3rd & 6th. All we seem to get these days are occasional airings of Tintagel, The Garden of Fand or Mediterranean. I don't believe his chamber or piano music fairs any better.

I enjoy Hovhaness's music a lot, there are some impressive works like the 'Vishnu' Symphony as well as some rather weak works like the 'Christmas Symphony'. Generally the later symphonies are less interesting than the earlier ones (c pre No 25), with a few exceptions (Mount St Helens Symphony).

PS I am not a hi-fi enthusiast and don't own an impressive hi-fi system either!

Downloads Discussion Archive / Re: American Music

Certainly here in the UK, even the Copland and Bernstein played and broadcast are now increasingly confined to a handful of 'popular' works. You no longer get Copland works such as Inscape, Music for a Great City, Statements, the Piano Variations and Fantasy or even Dance Panels or Bernstein works such as the Jeremiah Symphony, Dybbuk or Songfest. Even Barber has been reduced largely to a handful of songs, the Violin Concerto, Knoxville... and of course the Adagio. Adams is one of the few 'in composers' but he hasn't produced anything of interest to me for almost 15 years and has become a cliche of himself. Of the younger generation of American composers only Michael Hersch has made much of an impression on me (although Stephen Albert's untimely early death robbed us potentially of another composer of great interest), the rest seem largely to be, as I said above, mass produced mediocrities.

When I play works by Harris, Schuman, Hanson, Piston, Diamond and the like to friends and colleagues, the immediate recation is 'wow why do we never here works like this in concerts or on the radio these days'. Interestingly too these types of works and composers, as do Copland, Barber etc, seem to be more greatly appreciated by pop music loving friends than do the likes of Mozart, Beethoven and Brahms.

If classical music is to survive, a greater variety of music needs to be heard on the radio and in our concert halls.
