Very tragic indeed! At least he died doing the thing he loved most.

I'm certainly glad to see some "official" word on release date and info. I'm fine with Griffiths. I've not been unhappy with anything he has done. His Spohr cycle is really good. Thanks for the update Alan!  :)

As much as your discussions have helped me I'm glad I was able to help for once!  ;)

I have news for you guys! I got an email from Caroline Ranke the product manager at CPO and she said that the four symphonies will be released in "February or March but not later". So looking forward to these!

I really enjoyed this CD and not just the Reineke but every piece on it is worth a listen in my opinion. The production, sound quality and performance are superb!

Recordings & Broadcasts / Re: Suter Symphony D minor

Is this a "live" performance of this piece? I'm going to set Audacity to record it for me. Of course the Suter is available on Sterling Records with Moscow Symphony Orchestra conducted by Adriano here:

I understand your frustration but patient waiting is about our only choice in the USA. I do find that most of the time that on Amazon the Amazon Marketplace is a better choice for purchases. For instance the Robert Kahn Piano Trio for $33.00 is only $17.00 plus $4.00 shipping through the marketplace. Of course you do still have to wait for Amazon to actually list the work most of the time before even any dealers list it. Personally if I can get a title for $20.00 or less then I'm happy with that as I realize the rarity and limited production of most of the things I buy necessitates higher prices.

On the whole it would be helpful if, rather than throwing a whole slew of names at a particular thread, individual works were suggested and described in some detail. Mere lists of works are not all that useful. So, fewer names and more description, please!

Alan - I find this statement rather confusing and a little embarrassing considering the topic as stated by the original poster is "FIRST" symphonies. Is any more detail needed if that is the topic? Just need a composer's name as far as I can tell.

Kevin,

You can buy them directly from Guild.

I've been quite happy with their service and the prices aren't terrible.

Dan

Thanks hemmesjo! I'll look into that.  :)

I live in the Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex in Texas, and the other day, our local radio station (WRR 101) on their "unknown" composers piece of the day they played Brun's Overture to a Jubilee Celebration, which is also on this album. I had not ever heard Brun's music before this and it immediately caught my attention and curiosity to hear more. Unfortunately Guild has not released this recording in the US yet but when they do I will be buying a copy. I have since listened to the other recordings via Spotify and find Brun an intriguing composer. I can't say that his symphonies are immediately accessible to me but I hope that with further listenings they will grow on me. Undoubtedly there are moments that hold my interest and thus my willingness to devote more time to them. I intend to buy the four volumes currently available and the others in the future D.V.

Thank you Adriano for your committment to this music and for even participating here!

Sorry for resurrecting this thread but I just discovered this symphony and I have to say it's really a wonderful work. I especially enjoy the third movement. One of the most beautiful movements ever in my opinion. This piece deserves a place in anyone's library of unsungs!

Composers & Music / Re: The music of Erkki Melartin

A recording of Melartin's string quartets was published on two CDs by a Finnish record store -- perhaps Fuga. I had good luck finding the order form a few months back; today I can't find it come h or h w. Meantime, the two CDs are being "disseminated" here:

http://www.cylist.com/List/404350288/melartin-string-quartets-cd1.html

and here:

http://www.cylist.com/List/404238532/melartin-string-quartets-cd2.html

These are the CDs I am looking for but it does not list a label or even the ensemble. I'd love to get these if they are available anywhere in the world.

I know this is an old thread but I was wondering if anyone knows of a source for Melartin's String Quartets? I'd really like to hear them.

Thanks for posting this Mark. I was unaware of his site. Looks to be some very interesting pieces there. I'm impressed by the quality of the Raff works. Very nice stuff indeed!  :)
