Thank you Mark for this tip, I was inspired to follow up on your post and I also found Mongeroult's piano works wonderful, (and then the evil acquisitive imp shows up and says wouldn't it be nice if there was a piano concerto hidden somewhere)! In the meantime, the etudes and sonatas are lovely and I plan to listen to them all. Typically I go for big music like orchestral and chorus and orchestra, but it is nice to settle back a little and just relax and enjoy some elemental sounds.

I would like to hear Josef Labor's contributions--he was recently mentioned on here, he wrote chamber music and at least 3 Konzertstucke for "linke" hand, and maybe more. Wittgenstein turned to Labor for his first commission (not sure what resulted), Labor having been a longtime family friend as well as one of his teachers.

Joachim wrote several, premiered Brahms I think, Herzogenberg wrote one and a Rondo for vn and orch, Brahms discounted him until late in life when he said "Herzogenberg is able to do more than any of the others." (wiki). I am not in a position to put myself down for not listening only to "masterpieces".

I bought every Michael Ponti Candide/Vox LP I could find, agree the orchestras sometime not up his talent, but otherwise we might not even know about some of the composers whose music he played. I can listen to a poor recording if there is no other way to hear a piece that interests me.

Der Komponist Fritz Volbach lehrte ab 1918 an der Universität Münster und war bis 1925 auch Musikdirektor und Leiter des Musikvereins dieser Stadt, bis er 1929 emeritiert wurde. 1919 hat er das Sinfonieorchester Münster gegründet. Dazu brachte er schon einiges an Erfahrung mit, hatte er doch während des Ersten Weltkriegs im besetzten Belgien mit Fritz Brandt unter den Besatzern in Brüssel ein deutsches Sinfonieorchester ins Leben gerufen. Die Bedingungen in Münster waren deutlich besser und halfen Volbach dabei, zu einer der zentralen Figuren in der Musikgeschichte der Stadt zu werden.

Hi Marie, You might be able to find the score of Dora Bright's Piano Concerto No. 1 in a by contacting any of the principals of the performance within last few years by the young pianist Samantha Ward who played it with the Morley Chamber Orchestra conducted by Charles Peebles, I was able to correspond with Samantha Ward, but it has been awhile, I think Google might help. Nice piece to my ears, the pianist better than the orchestra, but never dreamed I would hear it at all.

Agree with giles.ender, what is the harm of a list? We know, ad infinitum, to whom this forum "belongs", and what the "remit" is, and so far it is worthwhile to read posts by other people but if anyone knows of other places to find information (and lists) about romantic composers let me know, hopefully before I get kicked off.
