For anyone interested, and it's certainly not me, the Symphony in A minor was also transcribed for organ and remains available on an edition-lade CD (EL CD 039).  The organist is Thomas Schmogner and the CD dates from 1998.  Go to www.edition-lade.com to find it.

No one ostensibly getting the physical CD copy of the Aulin, Vainberg, Moberg, Andree music is listing the seller here.  If your members are only referencing the Sterling CD, make sure you note that clearly in your comments.

I may have found a website selling a physical CD of this music.  If and when my CD arrives, I will put the seller on this thread at that time if there is a need for doing so.

Composers & Music / Re: Hélène de Montgeroult
Monday 13 November 2023, 01:49

The recording Hélène de Montgeroult, Portrait d'une compositrice visionnaire (Portrait of a visionary composer) was released in October 2023 on the French label Seulétoile. It incudes a selection of Montgeroult's études played by Marcia Hadjimarkos, the 6 Nocturnes for voice and piano with the mezzo-soprano Beth Taylor, and the violin sonata with violin ad libitum with Nicolas Mazzoleni. The Nocturnes and some of the études are world premiere recordings. It can be streamed or downloaded on major platforms. Physical CDs can be ordered from this French site, which ships anywhere in the world. The liner notes in English are available here (the CD booklet is in French only). This is the first recording made on a French square piano of Montgeroult's time, an instrument built in 1817 by Antoine Neuhaus in Paris. This beautifully restored instrument features four pedals that enable the player to showcase a wide variety of musical color and texture. The pedals are reminiscent of the registers on organs and harpsichords, and are used in a similar way, to bring out (or create) a particular atmosphere. Though typical of their time, the registers make for

Why nobody has mentioned it yet is beyond me but another Acte Prealable CD ( APO 512) is also available on Music Web.  I have it and it is wonderful.  Filled with gorgeous romantic string quartets plus a quintet.- Razorback

Thanks, I can try that.  I don't have a translator on my I-pad and could not decipher what was on the Supraphon post.  Does anyone own this CD?  Is the music worth a listen?

Thank you for the updates but my most important question remains unanswered:  Is this CD a new release or remanent of the past, long out-of-print and generally unavailable for purchase unless you get lucky.

Recordings & Broadcasts / Josef Beneš
Saturday 27 August 2022, 05:59
I saw M. Yablonsky's recent post on CD cover art in a post about J.F. Forrester.  Included therein is a CD cover of a certain Josef Benes.  The CD is labeled 'Complete String Quartets, performed by the Martinu Quartet on the Supraphon label.  This prompted a search for this particular CD.  I used identifiers like Joseph Benesch, Martinu Quartet, and Supraphon on sites ranging from jpc to discogs.  After all this I was left with one question:  is Josef Benes made of whole cloth and if so, where on earth can I find some trace of this CD?  That the man existed, that I now know, but what happened to the CD containing his chamber music appears to be only known to M. Yablonsky and God.  If anyone out there can help me access this CD, I would appreciate it.

Composers & Music / Rufinatscha Piano Trio
Wednesday 27 April 2022, 04:27
In response to Martin's query*, I too have listened to and enjoyed Rufinatscha's two piano quartets. He wrote three other chamber works, two string quartets and a piano trio.  It is his Piano Trio in A-flat Major that I love the most.  Has anybody else heard it and do you agree with me?

This is one of my favorite piano trios of all time and reminds me of Schumann at his best.  There is melody galore, especially in the Adagio expressione third movement.  It features one of Rufinatscha's most endearing melodies - borrowed from his piano concerto - and is the emotional heart of the piece.  The trio, which I consider standard repertoire material, remains, in my opinion, unnoticed and unheard by the vast majority of members to this blog.

The piano trio and two piano version of Rufinatscha's only piano concerto were released on a Tiroler Landesmuseum CD in 2001 that does not have a catalog number.  I was extremely lucky to obtain a copy many years later.  Most unfortunately, unless you have the CD or access to a copy, you probably will never be able to listen to this magnificent piece of romantic music.  I cannot find the trio on YouTube or anywhere else for that matter.  I am hoping that a fellow member with more knowledge and resources than I have, can prove me wrong.

At the risk of confirming your 'galloping senility' Wheest, JPC does indeed indicate 3-discs in the Sohy box set they are advertising.  The Senility Prayer:  "Grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway, the good fortune to run into the ones I do, and the eyesight to tell the difference."

Composers & Music / Re: Walter Rabl (1873 - 1940)

It appears that Walter Rabl's symphony has been removed from YouTube.  Does anyone know anywhere else where it can be listened to?

Composers & Music / Re: Hélène de Montgeroult

So far no mention has been made of the artist in the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique - Paris video playing Montgeroult's Etude No. 26 on a Erard copy by Christopher Clarke at the introduction to jdperdrix's link.  Later in the video (around 31:53) she plays Etude 8, an etude that has become a favorite of mine, along with a Nocturne with mezzo-soprano Ambroisine Bre.  I would like to bring her to your attention.  She is Marcia Hadjimarkos and her name needs to be included on the growing list of artists recording Montgeroult's music.  Hadjimarkos makes a excellent case for the music and deserves to be heard.   Etude 8 is more interesting and has more appeal to me than other etudes by Montgeroult that I have listened to.  Unfortunately, no-one, including Edna Stern, Nicolas Stavy or anyone else includes it on their CD.

Hadjimarkos will be making a recording of Montgeroult's music in September that should be available on CD or for streaming early in 2023. The CD will include Etude 8 along with Nocturnes for voice & piano, the one sonata that includes a violin part, a number of other etudes and a newly discovered fantasy.  The unusual thing about the recording is that it will be the first ever to be made on a period fortepiano, a square piano built in Paris in 1819 and recently restored by  Matthieu Vion.  Thus far all other recordings of Montgeroult's music have been made on modern pianos, or in Edna Stern's case, a piano dating from 1860. The CD and download will be released on the independent French label Seuletoile.  More information about her recording project will be forthcoming.  I plan to be first in line to purchase it.
