Rather unexpectedly, BIS has released a whole disc devoted to the orchestral music of Welsh composer (and father of conductor Owain) Arwel Hughes (1909-1988) -

BISCD1674

Anatiomaros (1943)
Prelude for Orchestra (1945)
Suite for Orchestra (1947)
Menna (1950-51, perf. 1954) - Prelude
Serch yw'r doctor (Love's the doctor) (perf. 1960) - Overture
Legend: Owain Glyndŵr (1979)

This all looks very interesting, especially as Hughes was a pupil of Vaughan Williams. I've not listened to it yet but it's lined up in the ever-expanding Spotify queue.

;D

it adds to rather than initiates the discography of all-Arwel Hughes discs- Chandos had a CD of one of his oratorios released in 1992, I think I recall reading about at least one (or two) others along the way. Thanks for the info!

I only heard another of his pieces briefly on Classic FM, but he has also written a rather nice Fantasia for Strings, on an "Elgar et al" compilation, also from BIS
