Way outside our recommended time-period here at UC, but how about this hyper-romantic piece?>>

indeed. and I gather his completions(plural?) of works by his teacher are rather good too.

Other than orchestrating Gliere's Violin Concerto do you know what other "completions" he was responsible for?

Alan Howe

I need to make it clear at this point that Lyatoshinsky's oeuvre in general is not up for discussion here because most of it falls outside our remit. However, I thought that the PC was an exception when I came across it, so please restrict yourselves to the topic of the thread. Thanks - and apologies for my lack of clarity.

What an enjoyable work the Piano Concerto is, but it's is definitely more UC-friendly than much of Lyatoshinsky's output (which I still quite enjoy in my robuster moments). Thanks, Alan.

I wasn't sure, hence my (?), but he seems to have orchestrated the overture to Lysenko's Taras Bulba posthumously as well.

Gareth Vaughan

Interesting. Thanks, Eric. As to the PC, it is, as Alan says, a gloriously Romantic sounding work. I didn't know it - so thanks for the introduction. Most enjoyable.

An "historical" (well, mono) recording of the PC with Tatyana Nikolaeva as soloist has been released on Forgotten Records and is reviewed here: http://www.musicweb-international.com/classrev/2020/Jul/Medtner_PC3_FR1699.htm
