Yes, I've noticed that too.   We listen and on the first hearings, don't always pick out anything memorable.  After all, we can hum along all the way thru the Beethoven 5th.   But how many dozen times have we heard the 5th.....???

How true! How true! And I wonder how often hard-pressed music critics commit this particular error. Imagine the negative effect of a prematurely arrived-at assessment of an unsung piece...
