The composition, as distinct from the Dux recording, is a very strong and impressive piece of work, one of Moniuszko's best IMHO. There is plenty of drama and pathos, but it's always strong on melody too. I have generally been highly impressed with Moniuszko's operas, but the finest and most effective of the compositions I've heard are the two shortish cantatas Milda and Nijola, recently issued by Naxos. Highly operatic, the first is intensely dramatic and the second lushly lyrical. Both feature an excellent soprano lead in Wioletta Chodowicz. I've loved them, but almost any Moniuszko is a rewarding listen.
