Have finally given this another, better listen. Oddly, it seems closer to Schumann 4 now than any Brahms precursor, though I find I like it anyway (which I generally don't with Schumann's 4th in its revised version.)

It's the first movement that distinguishes Grimm's Symphony from its predecessors - more than a hint of Bruckner, surely? And Chris Fifield has a lot to say about possible connections with/influences on Brahms 1 in his book - worth reading, by the way, Eric. Perhaps you could find a library copy?

I think I borrowed an interlibrary-loan copy awhile ago but can do so again after having heard more of the works in it...
