G H Witte Cello Sonata etc

Following on from the recent release of his Op5 Piano Quartet comes this excellent (certainly form the extracts) recording of his Cello Sonata Op15 and 3 Stücke Op14. Then there is a bonus in the form of the Cello Sonata by Hutschenruyter - a new name to me, I have to admit, but equally enticing! Certainly a must-buy!

Having now had time to play this CD through for the first time, I have to say that I would wholeheartedly recommend everything included in this recital! IMHO the performance and recording is first rate, and this hitherto unknown music, which is not too far removed from Brahms or Schumann, as one perhaps might expect, far exceeded my expectations! Certainly I would think the Piano Concerto Op5 well worthy of Hyperion's attention - on the strength of this Cello Sonata, his only recorded work to date, AFAIK!

There are a couple of waltzes by Witte for  piano 4 hands Op.7 on the Danacord label in their Rarities for Piano at Schloss von Husum series

Martin is surely correct. Witte's Cello Sonata is a glorious piece in the Schumann-Brahms mould. What a scandal it is that music of this quality has been neglected for so long.
